the pleasure of mississippi

you heard me correctly.

nancpop had the great pleasure of working in mississippi a few years ago on a power plant. he was warned by outsiders to stay away from the black parts of town - and if there's one thing you do not do it's warn nancpop!

he decided to rent from a fine woman of color in an all black neighborhood with a black club directly across the street (pool, billiards and BEER!) - the rental also came with fishing privileges in the two on-site ponds so all was well in his world.

we had occasion to go visit him a couple of times and the landlady and her husband were a couple of the most genuinely great people we have encountered as a family. she took our children to the local swimming pool where they were the least tanned kids in the water!

now, to my rant:

charlie rangel, the dhimmi congressworm from nyc, had this to say about mississippi in the sun/herald yesterday:

" JACKSON, Miss. - A Democratic congressman from New York says he wasn't trying to insult Mississippi in published remarks Thursday, but a Republican colleague from Mississippi says Rep. Charles Rangel should apologize to the state.

Rangel, D-N.Y., was quoted in a Thursday article in The New York Times, saying: "Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?"

Rep. Chip Pickering, R-Miss., issued a news release criticizing Rangel's words.

"I hope his remarks are not the kind of insults, slander, and defamation that Mississippians will come to expect from the Democrat leadership in Washington, D.C.," Pickering said.

Elbert Garcia, Rangel's press secretary in New York, said Rangel had received calls Thursday about the Mississippi quote.

Garcia e-mailed The Associated Press a response from Rangel: "I certainly don't mean to offend anyone, I just love New York so much that I can't understand why everyone wouldn't want to live here."

In midterm elections this week, Democrats captured control of the U.S. House and Senate for the first time in a dozen years.

Rangel is the ranking Democrat on Ways and Means, and is in line to become chairman of the powerful tax-writing committee. The New York Times article was about how the New York congressional delegation gained political clout in the midterm elections. Rangel said, among other things, that he wants to direct more federal money to his state.

U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., said he believes Mississippi will be treated fairly by Rangel and other Democratic leaders. As for Pickering's question of whether Democrats could hurt the state, Taylor said: "That's Chip."

Pickering was elected to the House in 1996 and for the first time will be a member of the minority party in Congress.

Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the nation and gets back more from the federal government than it pays for many programs. For example, Mississippi has one of the highest federal matching rates for Medicaid, getting back nearly $3 in federal money for every $1 of state money in the program that helps pay for health care for the needy, aged, blind and disabled, and for low-income families with children.

Mississippi also has received billions of dollars in federal relief since Hurricane Katrina struck on Aug. 29, 2005, destroying tens of thousands of homes and businesses and causing damage more than 150 miles inland.

Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., has been chairman of the Appropriations Committee, but will lose that position as Democrats take over the Senate majority.

Taylor, whose Bay St. Louis home was washed away by Katrina, said Rangel "was particularly helpful in the post-Katrina time" in securing money for Mississippi's recovery.

Taylor laughed as he responded to Rangel's comments about Mississippi. Taylor was stationed in New York when he was a young man in the Coast Guard. He said some New Yorkers "are stuck up about their home."

"You can tell him I want to live in Mississippi and wild elephants and tigers and bears couldn't keep me from living in Mississippi," Taylor said. "Hurricane Katrina couldn't keep me from building back here.""

in case mr. rangel didn't know, mississippi is one of the poorest states, but the MOST giving as far as being charitable - here's a list from 2003 for you charlie (and plucky too if you're looking)(previous year's ranking in parentheses after state):

the first amount is for the average adjusted gross income followed by the average amount of giving.

it always pists me off when i hear people slamming the south - there are no better people in the world. if you're broke down by the side of the road, there will be sixteen people pulling over to give you a hand. if you stop to help someone, they hunt you down and try to pay you back.

HEY, CHARLIE? do you know why people want to live in mississippi? because your wannabe white arse is in new york city!

okay, i feel much better now. thank you for hearing me out.

I love the South and Southerners! You're right they are the most generous, friendly, helpful people. If 16 people stop to help the 17th will stop to talk to you about life, the universe and everything...just to take your mind off your troubles!

one of our neighbors at our other home brush-hogged our seven acres on the highway for NOTHING! he wouldn't allow us to do ANYTHING in return - it is a beautiful piece covered with old growth timber and looked like a million dollars when he got done.

we've had people offer to buy that piece - it's prime for area growth although still in the country with wonderful G-dfearing people all around.

Hey! With thetoric like Rangel's, maybe the south WILL rise again!

Yeee-haw!

I have no problem with the south, but i wouldn't want to live there, it gets hot enough up here, in Michigan.

Best part of livin the the South is an absence of Yankees (at least outside of the city limits). Let's keep it that way!

nanc said...

rob - the women in the south age more gracefully than in other states - my husband believes it's because of the humidity and the moisture it keeps in the skin.

i have the ultimate southern diet too and it must be done for a solid week in august:

take as much food and drink as you'd like each day onto the front porch; eat and read until your heart's content; watch the birds and wildlife; sing or just be still; lose five pounds a day in sweat!

hey, when it's 80 with 90 percent humidity - you can lose a couple of pounds just walking to your car!

it's really not that bad after the first summer - one get's used to it. i guess like having crank cookers living next door, or car thieves up the street...just me thinking out loud...

The Merry Widow said...

Not only that, but the majority of Southern Ladies are very gracious, I think that attitude is condusive to graceful aging!

the only strange thing i noticed about mississippi on our visits there were the amount of women wearing hats - all sorts of hats! and not just on sundays! if you step right across the border into arkansas - you hardly notice many if any hats on women!

they do love their hats in mississippi. i like to wear my crusher when we go to the lake to keep the sun off my face however.

Having lived in North Carolina...I LOVE the South...sigh!!! Do they consider Virginia part of the South...lived there too....

I remember driving up and down a long winding road in Virginia many years ago. If you didn't somehow acknowledge the driver coming from ta other direction you were considered down right rude.

I learned to wave to everyone. The same could be said of the people in North Carolina.

Southerners aren't just hospitable because they were taught to be so...its in their very blood and their very way of life.

Aah and finding someone playing a fiddle on their veranda,...man I miss the South.

Reminds me of a song by Lynard Skynard (sp)...

Sweet home Alabama where the skies are so blue.
Sweet home Alabama, Lord, I'm coming home to you.

nanc said...

that's right, kell - if you don't wave heartily at EVERYBODY, you'll offend the entawr county! people start saying things like, "see them people over thar? they don't wave..."

we had some yankee neighbors at the end of our driveway we called "mr. & mrs. happyface!" we waved at them and smiled at least 300 days out of each of the last six years - all they did was sneer.

The Merry Widow said...

Ugh! If they are so snotty, what are they doing in Arkansas, for crying out loud? Go home and pick up your brains where you left them on the border!
Kelly-Virginia is Southern! It's too close to DC, but it is still the South!
Northerners have a tendecy to be in to big a hurry, as if life was going to run them over if they stand still long enough to say,"Good Morning"! They kill themselves and a lot of other people in the process!

Hey. My dad was born in Mississippi. I was born in Alabama.

Rangel couldn't live in Mississippi even if he wanted to. The minute the brothers got wind that he didn't know how to start his morning right (with prayer and a bowl o' grits) they'd run his carpetbaggin' ass off.

we're in arkansas and hard as we try cannot beat mississippi in the giving department - perhaps this year?

Although it didnt happen in the South, I have a little story that reveals the character of small town America.

A long time ago I was driving from Minneapolis to Bloomington, Indiana with some city-folk friends of mine.

We broke down in a corn field in Iowa and thought we were doomed. Within minutes a Harley Davidson type pulls up and offers a ride to town. We thought he came for trouble so we were really surprised. It was the first of many misconceptions that were destroyed on this journey.

The car was in bad shape so we had to spend over a day in this tiny town while it was repaired.

Back then I had a double mohawk and stood out like I had a neon billboard towering over my head with the words, “Kick Me” in bold flashing lights. I quickly discovered that most of the townspeople didnt even mind my appearance and they engaged me warmly. We took a walk to the “downtown” and there was an 80+ year old man weeding his front lawn. He stopped to greet us and treated us like we were family. The old man felt so at ease with us that we could have talked for hours. As we said goodbye you can feel that we both didn’t want to part ways. We felt liked we "belonged".

It was only the young-uns that gave us dirty stares.

One day they will grow up to be 80 years old, weeding their front lawns and kindly beckoning over strangers from the city.

(No, they are not 80 years old yet.)

nanc said...

fern? what does a double mohawk look like?

people who call southerners stupid and all sorts of various hateful name do not know, but the south knows how to survive in troubled times.

it may mean rebuilding someone's engine for a side of beef, or taking them some fuel for a 60 pound watermelon, but people take care of one another here. i am humbled by the people here, truly.

now if i could just get a couple of them to realize I HATE KNICK-KNACKS! always have.

of course there are people everywhere who rape the system - we even take care of those people if need be.

Rob, it depends on how you eat your grits.

If you eat them with a little butter and a smidgen of salt and pepper, you pass. If you put sugar and milk on them you're a gall durn Yankee.

Now for the $64,000 question, and second part of the test; what is the diffrence between cream of wheat and grits?

Grandma's Sunday breakfast:
Eggs to order
Homemade biscuits
Milk gravy
Ham, bacon or sausage patty
Fried potatoes or hominy grits, (grits)

The grits are made thick then patties are fried in bacon grease, top with a pat of butter then salt and pepper to taste.

Must be washed down with coffee made in a porcelain glazed pot on the stove.

Warren- That's how we knew which northerners to harras at college, they put milk and sugar on their grits, actually had one sitting at ou table, ever seen a bunch of college kids turn green? We nearly lynched him! Blaspheme I tell you!
Good morning, G*D bless and Maranatha!

it's one thing to say i don't like mississippi because of the humidity and quite another to be rangel with foot in mouth disease, or something like that!

nanc said...

rob and warren - GRITS IS GUUUD!

grits are made from hominy which is made from soaked and dried corn.

warren my maternal grandma used to make that concoction from almost any leftover cooked cereal - she called it scrapple! i love it.

i usually smother my grits with butter and cayenne pepper if i don't have gravy with them - YUMMY!

my mom makes a thing called "sop" whereby you add a cup of coffee to your leftover bacon or sausage grease, then add water - guess it's used for dunking - and i've never tried it.

warren:

wheat is wheat

and grits is corn!

I live at the same residence as Congressman Charles Rangel here in the 15th District, Harlem, New York City. Rangel has no shortage of failures within his own district where Black male unemployment is 55+% and children suffer from the diseases of asthma at an epidemic rate and crisis level. These people and a lot more citizens now living in Rangel's problem plagued district would love to live in Mississippi.

My family originates from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. My mother, Cheryl Philips, lived at 418 Sears Ave. Waveland, MS until Katrina destroyed everything she owned leaving her nothing more than a concrete slab. She now has a FEMA trailer but her spirits are bright, she's looking forward, and she LOVES living in Mississippi.

My mother can live here in the 15th District, New York City, right at the very same residence of Charles Rangel, here with me. She likes visiting however chooses to live in Mississippi, in a FEMA trailer, volunteering and helping to rebuild the community. That's character Charles Rangel knows nothing of.

Note Charles Rangel had no problem with Mississippi when it came to accepting $27,000 in Mississippi Band Choctaw Indian Tribal Money, funneled to him courtesy of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff (this is well documented). Then with all the arrogance that can only come from Charles Rangel he refused to return one penny once the scandal broke.

This is but one example of the shame and embarrassment Charles Rangel is as a Congressman. Locally Rangel represents 35 years of unfulfilled promise and functions basically as a "political crime boss". I've addressed a small example of Rangel's failures at a website I created called "www.CharlesRangel.com" where I spare no punches.

If it counts for anything, Mississippians, please accept my apology for my repugnant Congressman. Do know the enlightened and educated of Harlem simply refer to Rangel as our village idiot as he's so well demonstrated (once again). When you line your pockets with $27,000 of Mississippi Choctaw Indian Payments orchestrated by Jack Abramoff, refuse to return it, then insult anyone who wants to live in Mississippi....is that not an idiot in a nutshell?

Please, pass along my view on Rangel to anyone you think might be interested. Thanks.

Actually, there is a magical field of energy that encompasses the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee that affects human birth.

Anyone born outside that field of energy will never master the art of making grits.

They make instant grits for those kind of people.

"The preacher man says it's the
end of time
And the Mississippi River, she's a-
goin' dry...

The interest is up and the stock market's down
And you only get mugged if you go downtown...

I live back in the woods, you see,
My woman and the kids and the dogs
and me...

I got a shotgun, a rifle, and a
four-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive...

I can plow a field all day long,
I could catch catfish from dusk till dawn...

Make our own whiskey and our own
smoke, too,
Ain't too many things these old boys can't do...

We grow good old tomatoes and
homemade wine,
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive...

Because you can't stomp us out and
you can't make us run
'Cause we're them old boys raised on shotguns...

We say grace, and we say ma'am,
If you ain't into that, we don't give a damn...

We came from the West Virginia coal mines
And the Rocky Mountains, and the Western skies...

And we can skin a buck, we can run
a trot line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive...

I had a good friend in New York
City,
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly...

My grandpa taught me how to live
off the land,
And his taught him to be a businessman...

He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights,
And I'd send him some homemade wine...

But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife,
For forty-three dollars, my friend lost his life...

I'd love to spit some Beech-Nut in
that dude's eye
As I shoot him with my old forty-five
'Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive...

Because you can't stomp us out and
you can't make us run
'Cause we're them old boys raised
on shotguns...
We say grace, and we say ma'am,
If you ain't into that, we don't give a damn...

We're from North California and South Alabam',
And little towns all around this land...

And we can skin a buck, we can run a trot line,
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
A country boy can survive

Nanc asked what a double mohawk looks like. Well, the one I sported was in a V-shape. Usually when I got a mohawk I never spiked it because I didnt want to look like a fashion punk. But this was a wicked cut so I generously applied hairspray every morning until I was almost hospitalized from the fumes (JK).

I've always been a non-conformist and that is why I despise the anti-Bush crowd. They are lost in a sea of psychobabble like Socialist sheep without a paddle (not that sheep would know what to do with a paddle if they had one, but thats the point).

Conservatives are the new non-conformists.

nanc said...

ahem - fern? did the "v" in the double mohawk begin at the neck or your forehead?

and conservatives have generally never conformed - what are you talking about?!?

laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

"If you didn't somehow acknowledge the driver coming from ta other direction you were considered down right rude."

In the Ozarks, we do the fingerlift!

nanc said...

hmmmmm...daddio? i thought that was generally acknowledging the other guy's i.q....no wonder they turn around and chase me off the road - which here in the ozarks usually means a side road that always leads back to the road you were on in the first place!

have you ever noticed that? we took a 100+ drive one day just out seeing the sights without a map and kept turning left and lo and behold we ended up back home. there were a couple of times we came to water - in which case we just backtracked and continued turning left...

couldn't let this post pass without these words by bocephus (who i had the pleasure of seeing live in 1986 or '85):

Okay, Mr. B., WHERE'S MY GRITS?
I've got butter, sea salt and fresh ground pepper!
I know I wasn't involved in that incident, I was dodging police to get back to my apartment when Cruise went whacko in Palm Bay, Fla. I lived about a quarter of a mile from the last place he was holed up! It was 12:30 am, and I had just gotten off of work, all I wanted to do was go home to bed!

just thought i'd bring another foot by, plucky - seems you've had your two in your mouth so long your face has lost elasticity and you need another to fill the dead space.
