You Can't Protect Something You Never Had!

In 1971, as a new soldier, I was assigned duty in the 1st Infantry Division. The "Big Red One", had returned stateside from Vietnam as part of a de-escalation and for many solders who had served their tour in Vietnam, it became their next duty station.

I never heard so much bullshit in my life, the same stories with different players, over and over again, You could roll your eyes all you wanted but there was an unspoken rule; it was considered bad form to call bullshit on another soldiers war stories.

There were three I heard most often:

Taking Viet Cong up in helicopters and pitching them out if they didn't talk.

Dropping 100 pound sacks of rice on a villager and killing him by getting him to "catch" the bag of rice.

The Vietnamese barber that worked on a, (air base, naval base, Marine base, Army base), that was actually a Viet Cong spy, who was killed trying to infiltrate and blow up the base the night after they had given, (said, teller of story), a shave with a straight razor that same day.

Now, I really must tell you, that last story gave me a chill, (every time I heard it). Almost as much as the time my girl friend made me take her home from lovers lane after we heard on the radio that an insane killer with one arm escaped from the State Hospital. I really freaked out when I found the hook stuck in the car door!

OK, so I didn't believe the last story. It was only because of all the accounts of the other two stories that I heard from those that had either did it, saw it or knew someone that had. I mean its ridiculous! How many Vietnamese/Viet Cong/Spy's were there and how did they keep from being buried under hundreds of thousands of their Viet Cong comrades and millions of tons of rice that were throw from helicopters?

Anyway, over the years and even as a young man, I developed what I call a BS filter. A very good one, the Lord knows I heard enough of it from my relatives growing up.

At the beginning of August, "The New Republic" published at story by a "Scott Thomas" (Scott Thomas Beauchamp), that contained three pieces of obvious BS recounting tales meant to show how "war dehumanizes people". In other words, more anti-war propaganda.

The stories recounted:

A woman whose face was disfigured by an IED, either an ally of the US or a contractor, who was taunted in a mess hall because of her disfigurement, and then fled the mess hall in tears.

Soldiers who were digging up the remains of children in what was clearly represented as a Saddam era, mass grave, and one soldier takes the skull cap of a child, (with hair and rotting flesh still attached), and wears it as a cap under his helmet the whole day.

A driver of a Bradley fighting vehicle, (very much like the APCs they replaced and I used to drive), who constantly is swerving to run down dogs, vendors stands, etc.

The New Republic's Editors, have released several statements backing PVT Beauchamp's fairytale even though Beauchamp has stated that the first incident with the woman happened in Kuwait before he was stationed in Iraq, (I am firmly of the opinion that none of them happened!) I know BS when I hear it.

The New Republic seeks to protect its journalistic integrity.

Don't worry boys, you never had any!

Go Here for a rundown of the Scott Beauchamp story.

And yet we have photographs of German soldiers in Afghanistan decorating their vehicles with the skulls of dead Afghans; one German soldier is photographed putting a skull on his penis.

I ran across an older gentlemen while I was a recruiter who claimed to have recieved the CMOH in Korea. The AFJROTC instructor was planning on having him speak to the unit. Yet when I asked which president presented it to him, he wouldn't answer me. So I checked in several books in the library that lists CMOH recipients. Needless to say his name wasn't in anything I could find.

As far as I was concerned he was spitting on all those who had received it.

I told the AFJROTC instructor.

Now the MSM is tryin to make HIM out to be the VICTIM..

The Left has spared no effort in tryin to destroy the Military.. But howm long can the Troops hold up under the constant onslaught of disgraceful attacks by their fellow Americans ??

Sadly, the New Republic will appeal to the mindless leftists who think that truth is e'er-malleable and who will use any persecution as evidence that they were correct. To the Left, there is no tactic which is out of bounds. That tells you much of the kind of people that they would see in power, no?

RS, your point is well taken.

Its like playing a game of Calvinball.

The sheer level of disingenuousness involved is madding enough to drive me to homicide!

I would hope that the stories are true. War is so utterly dehumanizing that this sort of macabre humor is necessary to preserve sanity.

Get hold of a copy of "Gunner Palace". Does a good job of chronicling part of the topic.

I've heard the war stories about Vietnam, not coming from lefties. War is not a dinner party.

When you fight someone or something, you take on characteristics of your enemy, as your enemy takes on your characteristics.

elmers brother said...

ren that's interesting

I haven't read of any GI's dressing like women and blowing up mosques.

I've never heard of American's walking into a market place and blowing to smithereens the entire place either...guess there goes Ren's theory.

I don't agree.

The best and worst of humanity is always there waiting to show itself and dehumanizing behavior is a reflection of the people that exhibit it.

I'm not sure what your statement;("I've heard the war stories about Vietnam, not coming from lefties. War is not a dinner party."), means in this context. Those stories were told to me by people that were drafted into the military ranging in age from 21 to possibly 23. They had never voted nor did they have any higher education.

BS is BS no matter who spouts it but to elevate what is basically a harmless entertainment for bored troops into propaganda meant to "dehumanize" and demonize soldiers and turn public opinion against the military for political or monetary gain should be a crime!

The Beauchamp stories are unbelievable to anyone with actual military service for a host of reasons both practical and technical.

Anyone disrespecting a person injured by an IED or Enemy fire in a chow hall would get the crap kicked out of them on the spot.

The newer helmets are form fitting and there is no place to stick a hunk of skull between the top of your head and the helmet and I can't imagine a soldier wearing a hunk of rotting bone and flesh on top of his head for any length of time let alone a full day.

I've never driven a Bradley but the Armored Personnel Carrier that I drove, very much like a Bradley, all over Germany was faster than a Bradley and there is no way in hell it was nimble enough to run down a dog. Track vehicles are noisy. I never saw a dog stay anywhere near the road but I did see a few getting the hell off the road when we got near.

Think about it Ren, the worse and the best
"ANDERSON, WEBSTER

Rank and organization: Sergeant First Class, U.S. Army, Battery A, 2d Battalion, 320th Field Artillery, 101st Airborne Infantry Division (Airmobile). Place and date: Tam Ky, Republic of Vietnam, 15 October 1967. Entered service at: Winnsboro, S.C. Born: 15 July 1933, Winnsboro, S.C. Citation: Sfc. Anderson (then S/Sgt.), distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as chief of section in Battery A, against a hostile force. During the early morning hours Battery A's defensive position was attacked by a determined North Vietnamese Army infantry unit supported by heavy mortar, recoilless rifle, rocket propelled grenade and automatic weapon fire. The initial enemy onslaught breached the battery defensive perimeter. Sfc. Anderson, with complete disregard for his personal safety, mounted the exposed parapet of his howitzer position and became the mainstay of the defense of the battery position. Sfc. Anderson directed devastating direct howitzer fire on the assaulting enemy while providing rifle and grenade defensive fire against enemy soldiers attempting to overrun his gun section position. While protecting his crew and directing their fire against the enemy from his exposed position, 2 enemy grenades exploded at his feet knocking him down and severely wounding him in the legs. Despite the excruciating pain and though not able to stand, Sfc. Anderson valorously propped himself on the parapet and continued to direct howitzer fire upon the closing enemy and to encourage his men to fight on. Seeing an enemy grenade land within the gun pit near a wounded member of his gun crew, Sfc. Anderson heedless of his own safety, seized the grenade and attempted to throw it over the parapet to save his men. As the grenade was thrown from the position it exploded and Sfc. Anderson was again grievously wounded. Although only partially conscious and severely wounded, Sfc. Anderson refused medical evacuation and continued to encourage his men in the defense of the position. Sfc. Anderson by his inspirational leadership, professionalism, devotion to duty and complete disregard for his welfare was able to maintain the defense of his section position and to defeat a determined attack. Sfc. Anderson's gallantry and extraordinary heroism at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty are in the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army."

Ren-Go see if you can find a copy of Jeremiah Denton's book, "When Hell Was InSession". There you will meet and get to know some of the best this country has ever produced. Col. Guaridino lives in this area and I have had the honor of meeting and speaking with him more than once.
These men were sustained through years of torture, starvation and abuse by 3 things; love of and trust in G*D, love of and trust in country and love of and trust in family. G*D and family did not let them down, but their country has become a place that grieves them.
Go read it, it is small and short, but you may need to read it a little at a time due to the intensity.
BTW-Hanoi Jane's visit had a detrimental effect on them.
Good morning, G*D bless and Maranatha!

Nanc-He can't. He is demonized AND OCD, so he can't leave, he isn't allowed to, and he is accepting the lie that he is affecting us worse than the necessity to scrape the bottom of a shoe. He is convinced that he is a major player and disruptor.
Reality is, he's a pathetic joke.
He has chosen to believe the lie, so he is inside of a major delusion. I could pity him, except he wants it that way. And he is probably unaware of just how foul his physical surroundings and inward self are. Demons do like to degrade humans, they get great pleasure from it.
