Senator Ted Stevens explains the Internet

Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) explains why he voted against inserting a rider, dealing with net neutrality provisions, (whatever those are), into a moving telecommunications bill.

His explanation leaves me breathless and rivals the ignorance of another Senator, who might still claim to have "been instrumental" in the creation of the Internet.

There's one company now you can sign up and you can get a movie delivered to your house daily by delivery service. Okay. And currently it comes to your house, it gets put in the mail box when you get home and you change your order but you pay for that, right.

But this service isn't going to go through the internet and what you do is you just go to a place on the internet and you order your movie and guess what you can order ten of them delivered to you and the delivery charge is free.

Ten of them streaming across that internet and what happens to your own personal internet?

I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?

Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially.

So you want to talk about the consumer? Let's talk about you and me. We use this internet to communicate and we aren't using it for commercial purposes.

We aren't earning anything by going on that internet. Now I'm not saying you have to or you want to discriminate against those people [...]

The regulatory approach is wrong. Your approach is regulatory in the sense that it says "No one can charge anyone for massively invading this world of the internet". No, I'm not finished. I want people to understand my position, I'm not going to take a lot of time. [?]

They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the internet. And again, the internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck.

It's a series of tubes.

And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.

Now we have a separate Department of Defense internet now, did you know that?

Do you know why?

Because they have to have theirs delivered immediately. They can't afford getting delayed by other people.

[...]

Now I think these people are arguing whether they should be able to dump all that stuff on the internet ought to consider if they should develop a system themselves.

Maybe there is a place for a commercial net but it's not using what consumers use every day.

It's not using the messaging service that is essential to small businesses, to our operation of families.

The whole concept is that we should not go into this until someone shows that there is something that has been done that really is a violation of net neutrality that hits you and me.

And just when I thought I was beginning to understand....

Now for a few gleaned quotes and "Power Point Presentation" (see link) from Meryl Yourish's Blog

Q:[...] If you replace "tubes" with "pipes", what is the issue with Stevens' analogy?

A: Why don't you send him an internet and ask him?

If you'll excuse me, I need to send someone an Internet.

So you on vacation or what Nanc? Haven't seen you in awhile! What gives? Hope all is well and I wish you and Warren a great HAPPY 4TH of JULY! GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Was that dude drunk or is he really that stupid? The internet pipe is full and his internets are waiting in line? Please, someone take the "R" title away from his name; it's a disgrace to conservatives everywhere to have this guy in the GOP.

Internets are getting backed up? The commercial net is blocking the internet? WOW!!

The Merry Widow said...

Good morning Nanc, welcome to the human race! So good of you to come down and join the rest of us! Was it an "Aaarrrggghh!" or "Oh, Boo!" moment? It's a good thing G*D created us without the ability to kick our own fannies, otherwise we would have bruised bottoms to sit on, constantly!
G*D bless, sounds like you need alittle grace for the day! Enjoy Tazzmaxx!

And this Senator gets paid??? Obviously he doesn't get paid over the Internet. I can just see him accessing his bank account via the web.

Warren said...

That's twice now that Nanc has made a mistake!

(Both times she thought she did something wrong.... but didn't.) :^)

Ted Stevens is and always has been an embarassment to the GOP for his pork-barrel politics. It's not comforting to learn that the man is massively ignorant of the bills he votes upon.

We get the Senators we deserve. Can we say term limits?

I thought he was pushing for drilling in ANWR, which I think is a good thing.

Warren said...

Any US Senator from Alaska will support oil drilling in ANWR if they want to remain a US Senator.

The size of Stevens "pork barrel" projects spending is only exceeded by Robert Byrd of West Virginia.

Stevens comment reminds me of how out of touch these politicians are with the every day life's of normal people. People that don't have and have never owned a computer know what an Email is. I suspect that some aide sends all of his for him when Stevens says, "Send a Internet to..."

nanc said...

oh warren - you just love it when i'm wrongly right!

elmers brother said...

you talking about that bridge to nowhere he wanted to build?

I know I'm tech challenged! But, really! Are you sure this isn't a misplaced April Fools joke?
Hope everyone had a beautiful 4th! The shuttle launch was picture perfect, could watch it really far downrange!
Good morning and G*D bless all!

No TMW, I'm afraid it isn't a joke. Yorish even had an audio link up.

EB, In certain circles, Alaska's Ted Stevens is known as the prince of pork (we know who the king is). I've been aware of it since well before the 2000 elections and truthfully, I had forgotten about the bridge until I was in the middle of this article. The bridge incident was particularly egregious to me but not because of the pork, He threatened to resign if it was removed from the Senate appropriations bill.

Type, Ted Stevens pork, into google.

Always On Watch said...

A little harvest from Google Search, from this source:

I am guilty of asking the Senate for pork and proud of the Senate for giving it to me.

Oh. My. Firk. Ding. Goodness.

This is the moron who wouldn't give up his "bridge to nowhere," and when he came under fire simply shoveled the money into transportation, rather than give it back to the taxpayer!

It is idiots like these who will have us paying internet tax on top of our ISP fees.

PLEASE, Alaska, get rid of this mouth-breather!

as aa great band once said "i'm back in black! yes i'm back in black!!" hey nanc, did you ever find out what type of music it was?

nanc said...

although we couldn't stay long enough to hear tazz and his son play, he told me he likes to play outlaw country - which is a-okay in our book. merle haggard is a favorite of his along with quite a few others. his son is a master recording genius and has his own recording studio in the little rock area.

merle is a neighbor to one of our best friends and is quite the geeky little character although we've not met him. pushes ford trucks, but drives a chevy. go figure.

what on earth are you up to, warren?

today was nancpop's birthday so have been a little busier than usual and then, of course, i needed my beauty nap! you don't think i got to looking like this by being awake all the time, didja?

He may get sober one day ...but his other small defect cannot be cured.

I belong to Church Council, we have been wrestling with the budget for the past few months! When G*D wants to get our attention HE swipes the wallet. So, last week we had 3 meetings, totaling about 20 hrs. 8 of them on Saturday, I am wiped out! We had to let a pastor and 2 support staff go. Not a good week! Now we just have to figure out where to cut a further 40 to 50,000! Ugh!
Nanc- Tell Nancpop, belated Happy Birthday!
BTW- How's Bruce coming along? Is rehab going well, is he finished? back at work? Need to update the prayer list.
Good morning and G*D bless!

nanc said...

bruce is doing great, tmw. thank you for the prayers. you know he had, or maybe has, a shot at the survivor series? if he's physically able - he's not one to complain about aches and pains.

i don't watch network t.v. so will never see it if he goes. another friend's daughter was in the great race and i will miss that also - i cannot compromise my stand on the rottenness of network television. my t.v. when on is usually tuned to fox news or the history channel.

and then we have skyangel satellite at our little home on the mountain.

The job turned into a nightmare!

I didn't get in until midnight on Saturday and spent most of Sunday sleeping. The rest of the day I spent moving files and installing programs on a new hard drive.

I didn't even check my Email until after midnight last night.

Always On Watch said...

Warren,
I hate if when the hassles of real life interfere with cyber fun.

BTW, I got a Rosie t-shirt yesterday. I came out from the movie Islam: What the West Needs to Know and had to wait a while before my husband came to pick me up. Right around the corner from the theater were Ford's Theatre and The House Where Lincoln Died; I made a quick sweep of those and was heading back to the pick-up point when I spotted the Rosie shirt in a gift-shop window. The clerk was nice enough to let me try on the shirt in the ladies' room. It fit! Never mind the outrageous price. I had to have that shirt!

I wore my purchase out of the ladies' room, paid the ransom, and gave my husband quite a surprise. Too bad that I didn't have the shirt to wear while watching the movie.

I'll try to get my husband to take a digital photo to post at my web site.

And just wait until I wear the shirt to the homeschool classes! Yee-haw!

We're just coming out of a full moon, lycanthrope abounds! Whatever jobro and co. are up to, truth will prevail even if we have to fight for it. But isn't G*D and truth worth the fight? When one is assailed, the rest must charge forth. Evil is being stirred up and is breaking out all over, like a really bad case of acne!
Nanc- Saw on another thread that your church has got "programitis! How I hate that, we have avoided that, so far! But G*D has taken us behind the woodshed, not fun, but it's nice to know that HE cares so much!

Baloney, Jacob! Don't make us come up to Tenn. and straighten out your thinking! Just because we all have lives doesn't mean we don't care! We love you, we were just giving you space because of your new job, how's that going anyway? If you need time, take it! Just come by and comment so we know how you're doing and enjoy your life and family! Some seasons of our lives are less forgiving of time than others! Go with the flow and deal with the important stuff. Go with G*D and be well, do well and stop to smell the roses!
Good morning and G*D bless!
