Elijah

I know that you installed Firefox and you're still having trouble.

Can you email me at all?

Try composing the Email off line then logging in to send it. I sent you an Email after getting one from you, but I don't know if you got it. If you can't receive my Emails let me know and send me your street address and I'll reply by snail mail.

If you can get a Email to me.

all knowing computer guru- do you know how to reactivate the task manager? ever since my sister used my comp, ctrl-alt-delete doesn't work and the right click on the taskbar to get into it is also on the fritz.

Warren is avatar-guy and computer-guru. If anybody knows the answer, he does.

Wish I could help you, DM. I'm just learning my way around any skill outside word-processing.

Warren said...

DM, it could be any number of things.

Try the system restore and if you can't do that or it doesn't work, you might have to do a repair (re-instalation) of XP.

Sounds like you have a corupted system file or registry entry. System restore will repair a corupted system file but I don't believe it will repair a registry.

warren - i'm sending you a very important e-mail with a question - appreciate much!

Warren said...

I quit using Windows with the advent of XP. I don't like it.

AOW, If you think I know my way around a computer, you should to meet my "guru". (He's scary!)

Hopefully it will be back up in a while.

I got your message.

nanc said...

nanc said...

i went through all the steps and it didn't work!

nanc said...

i sent you another pesky note.

nanc said...

nevermind, there it is....thank you warren!

nanc said...

i made a post at aow and fern's - talk about fatwa-time!

nanc said...

i'm lovin' every minute of this - i never knew how exhilirating an avatar could be!

nanc said...

p.s. even if it's not my own...

my last resort is a system restore- i've already had to do it twice in about 2 years since i've had this comp. what a pain in the ass that was. it would be even bigger now because i would lose my norton firewall and anti virus.

anyway, i emailed the compaq tech support this morning, and received a response in a few hours which gave me directions and now i'm back in business. "ctrl-alt-delete" works.

nanc said...

i've never used that drummaster - what does it do?

Warren said...

DM, would you forward me a copy of the Tech Email? I want to see what they did.

You might consider buying GoBack delux. XPs system restore is based on it. It uses about 10% of your hard drive but it keeps snap shots of your system that will let you revert back to a specific place, (up to about 30 days) the only things you lose are those changes in you system during that period of time.

Using the XP cd's "Repair", you can re-install just the operating system without changing your other files but you have to reinstall all of your updates.

Warren said...

Nanc, what, system restore?

nanc said...

oh no, i've done system restores two or three times in the last year and a half - the ctrl-alt-delete - what on earth is that for? i do have to disable my norton firewall every time i go on line, but have the system firewall in place and haven't had a problem in quite a few hours. just kidding - it's been months.

p.s. fern just noticed i have his avatar.

Warren said...

Hitting cont-alt-del, on a windows machine, will opent the task manager. Hit it twice and it will do a "hard" restart.

Unknown said...

warren:

sure thing. for now a brief synopsis- they had me use the start menu then run. after, i entered a command which brought up about 4 or 5 folders. they told me a location to get to which took me about a minute fo find. in this location, i was able to reactivate it.

my computer has a feature where i can upload and restart from a last known "clean" point. i never tried doing this but have considered it.

that CD repair thing sounds good. so it really doesn't delete anything you put on like iTunes music, word documents, etc.?

nanc:

"ctrl-alt-delete" prompts up the windows task manager. this allows you to see what applications are running and can close any program down at your disposal, especially if it freezes. you can also shut down from this point.

you shut off the firewall to go online? it should be on when you are connected. keeps hackers out. it's already done it twice for me. do you have a red (-) sign in front of the globe [if you have norton firewall]?

nanc said...

yes - i have the red -

there was something seriously wrong with my computer last year and now i have the system firewall on and have to disable norton EVERY time i go on line or cannot go on line. haven't really tried anything else because this is working just fine.

nanc said...

actually i just disable it once each day when it turn the computer on. no problems.

Unknown said...

nanc:

what it's doing now, prevents access to the internet. in order for you to utilize the full benefits of the firewall, you should do this:
1.) right click on the globe
2.) select "allow traffic"- this will turn it on and allow you to go online with the protection of the firewall and you won't need to disable it to use the internet.

"my computer has a feature where i can upload and restart from a last known "clean" point. i never tried doing this but have considered it."

That's the "crippleware" version of GoBack.

It works well enough but not as good as the Deluxe version. Its especially handy if you pick up a Virus or your computer starts acting screwy after a download. You just pick a point in time right before the trouble and it reverts the computer exactly as it was before you had problems.

"that CD repair thing sounds good. so it really doesn't delete anything you put on like iTunes music, word documents, etc.?"

I've never used it myself. Its the "repair" option on the installation CD. I've heard it has mixed results and you have to re-install all of the Microsoft updates. But its "supposed to" leave your files alone except the ones for the OS.

Nanc, I'd take DMs advice if I were you.

I'm behind a hardware and a software firewall and I'm not near the target that a Windows computer is.

Now a few words of advice.

Export a copy of your address book and links/bookmarks to your desktop then send them to yourself at a Gmail account. You'll appreciate it if you ever have a total system crash or hard drive failure or even a new computer. If you ever need them you just download them and import them into your Email program and web browser.

Since I'm always messing around with different operating systems and web browsers on different hard drives, I use this technique quite often.

nanc said...

mine doesn't have an "allow traffic" button when i right click the globe - it has

norton personal firewall

about personal firewall

live update

help

disable

Unknown said...

nanc:

it should be underneath the boldfaced "norton personal firewall", but that's OK.

the other way to do it is by double clicking on the icon of the norton personal firewall OR getting to the program via start button and the all programs arrow [mine is under 'pc security and backup']. when the program box pops up, look at the top left corner of it. there should be a (+) sign that says "allow traffic" next to it. click on this and you should see the (-) sign on the bottom small icon disappear.

nanc said...

it won't work that way. but i'm not complaining - there is a system firewall up.

Warren said...

Elijah, is still trying to get through.
(I'm begining to sound like a medium)
enie menie chilly beanie, Elijah is about to speak! (apologies to Bullwinkle Moose.)

Elijah, if you can read this, I'm sending you an Email with my street address. I have a drastic solution but at least, if it works, we can get you a computer up and running. But I have to send you a couple of CDs.

Warren said...

Nace, the problem might be that you can't run two different software firewalls at the same time. The computer will do just what you are describing

nanc said...

thank you warren and drummaster, at least now i know who to come to if i do have p.c. problems. you guys are wondy!

Warren said...

I hope that isn't a note of contraryness that I detect!

nanc said...

definitely not - i'm not contrary if i can help it! i thought my sincerity shone through. did you see the poem tmw wrote to me? i'm kind of liking this avatar - i hope fern doesn't want it back soon...i think i like it because it's NOT me!

nanc said...

i left you a message at beamish.

Warren said...

I was just teasing.

TMW? Where?

nanc said...

i knew that and so was i! i think it was at beak's, went something like this:

nanc
nanc

how does your
garden grow
with freedomnow

blah, blah, blah, blah - i don't remember the rest - it was funny. i published the man song for you too at beamish - love that song. what's really great about that song is the line that goes "and i don't want to hear any whining, so i'll shut up!"

nanc said...

morning warren - have a great weekend!

nanc said...

warren, when should intelligent people begin to be concerned:

http://news.yahoo.com/fc/world/iran

i want to know when to start worrying.

nanc said...

good friday to you and yours, warren. beamish has posted an eloquent reading from romans tonight.

Warren said...

Nanc, I would say that the time to worry is past and now is the time for action!

But you're the first person to ask me.

;^)

You have a great weekend too!

i do trust your judgment in such matters. levelheads work much better than bobbleheads i always say!

I'll be away from the computer today, its a work day for me and I have a contract job to finish.

afternoon to you, warren, sorry you had to work today.

nanc said...

just so you know you are not alone in the goofy family department - i also could tell you some stories. if some of the people in my family had been born into other families, they'd never have made it this far. my husband is still amazed that i came from my family.

great message at church today regarding the pagan "easter" and how we should celebrate the resurrection AND call it that.

Always On Watch said...

I'll have to wait until my 90-year-old aunt passes before I write the book about my crazy family. This fine lady would be embarrassed if I told all the tales; she married into a wild group, I tell you.

Warren,
Blogger question here....

When one pulls up any one of my individual blog articles, the right sidebar has slid way down. The homepage is fine, but the problem appears when an individual article is pulled up. Why? I've seen the same problems on some other blogs.

You can reply here or shoot me an email. Thanks in advance.

Warren said...

AOW, its probably a pecularity of your screen resolution setting.

You are using a resolution of 1280 X 800.

It doesn't do it for me and I'm using a resolution of 1024 X 768, but I am also using a different browser. Nanc is using the same browser you are but with the same resolution that I have. So lets do a test.

Nanc, please click on the following link and and look at the right side bar to see if its crowded down toward the bottom.

LINK

If Nanc sees the same thing I do then I will answer your question, if not I'll have to do a little research.

nanc said...

nope, everything is at the top where it usually is. what am i supposed to be seeing? fair warning, i sometimes see red steeples...

Take a breath!

LOL

nanc said...

sorry - all my thoughts don't usually come at once...or even together. they've been known to show up a week apart from each other. craziest thing - not me - the thing.

did you have a good weekend, warren?

Warren said...

Nanc, hopefully you were seeing the same thing I did, nothing.

" fair warning, i sometimes see red steeples..."

err... ok?

"that was a joke!"

Will you swear that on a fresh roadkilled rabbit?

" p.s. - should we be talking about our browsers here in public like this? "

Nanc, we're all grownups here, how can we have a serious discussion if we can't say the "b" word with a straight face?

I worked 12 hours without a break on Saturday but Sunday was nice. Jackie, my wife, asked me to take her out to eat and we had a good time. Thanks for asking.

nanc said...

i love to see married couples who still date! good for you, warren. you are a good husband and friend.

i've got to go now and water the silver maples my schweetie planted before he comes home friday - if i kill them within the week, i'll certainly get the old eye-rolling and a couple of plant killer jokes directed at me...

Warren said...

AOW, the best thing to do is set your screen resolution to 1024 X 768 otherwise you would have to fiddle with the blogger style sheet.

Setting to the lower resolution will also make text appear bigger.

To set screen resolution in XP:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display. On the Settings tab, under Screen resolution, drag the slider, and then click Apply.

When prompted to apply the settings, click OK. Your screen will turn black for a moment.

Once your screen resolution changes, you have 15 seconds to confirm the change. Click Yes to confirm the change; click No or do nothing to revert to your previous setting.

So says the great and powerful, Microsoft!

;^)

Warren said...

AOW, a little better description.

Style sheets are written to look best at certain resolutions. This sometime causes them to look or act screwy at other resolutions especially when you have sidebars or columns.

Since the main text has president over the sidebars, it crowds them out or does other strange things.

Warren,
Thanks for this info. I have so much to learn and am on a slow learning curve, now that we're in the last month of classes.

Always On Watch said...

Warren,
I just ran a little experiment. With Mozilla, my right sidebar is where it should be, but with IE, the sidebar slides down.

Sheesh!

nanc said...

aow - remember when just a good girdle would keep everything in the right place? ha! i should not complain - i've been blessed with the good genes of a plains indian. but still, how far we've come.

Warren said...

AOW, that's why I had Nanc take a look.

I use Firefox which is a variant of Mozilla. Nanc uses the same version of Microsoft IE that you were using.

Mozilla is another option for you but if you use Outlook to retrieve your Email, it can make your browser crash. At least that's been my experience.

Warren said...

If you decide to use mozilla you can move your bookmarks over from IE.

Always On Watch said...

Warren,
I selectively use Firefox. I downloaded it when I was having trouble with Yahoo email; I could view all mail with IE, but had no field in which to type text when I hit reply. The problem is intermittent and may have something to do with AOL.

I don't think that I'm using Outlook to retrieve email.

Thanks for you help!
