The text doesn't work well in the avatar sized images.
They're too "busy" and have too many hues.
Suggestions?
Something different?
For it to work well the image needs a ratio of about 3:4 , taller than it is wide.

The other image has a darker background.
I rescaled the image and cropped it so the forward figures appear bigger. I changed the type of siren to one that is more commonly recognized and lightened the background to bring the foreground out.
Another idea. I cropped more of the image and added some color and texture. Also got rid of the guys hand that was in front of her feet and replaced it with some water and rock.

AOW, I checked, you used the larger file. You are going to get more geeky if you mess with images very much! You not only have to be concerned with the picture, you have to know how HTML handles images.

I think you are misunderstanding what to do. You put the URL of the "Large" pictures in, as your personal photo inside your personal profile information in Blogger. Then blogger automatically resizes them for your avatar from the larger image.
For instance: Beaks avatar is actually 269 pixels wide X 408 pixels tall, but on his profile page it is 75 X 115, in his posts, it is 60 X 91 and on his blog it is 53 X 80. But its all the same picture.
My problem is that I don't know what size the avatar will finally show up as, so I am trying to maximize a very complicated image so it will show well and be discernible even in the smaller sizes.
Right click on the image you want to choose and the click on properties, expand the properties box to a full window then highlight the address and copy it.

The last part is the name of the image and what type of file it is, (file extension).
Open your blogger dashboard and click on the "edit profile" link toward the upper right hand side of the page.
The "edit user profile" window will open the scroll down the page until you see the, "Photograph" text and in the box that says "Photo URL", right click and paste the URL that you have copied from the image.
Scroll on down toward the bottom of the page and click the orange "Save Profile" button and you will be ready to go.
Its just a question of your personal preferences and which image looks best when you post.

that used to be my favorite pre-concert warm-up song. i remember as a teen in san diego going to concerts and seeing my step dad (who was a sideline get the band to the venue guy) backstage schmoozing with the big names and not being affected at all. i must be the most fortunate person on the planet. it was yucky to be seen with your parents then!

i have said it before, but i will never understand john mayer. i know for a fact that he can play a mean guitar when he wants to because i have seen him do it on 'chappelle's show'. but for some reason all the songs i have heard of his are mediocre mainstream pop rock, which i hold to be sub par. point being- he could do better.
speaking of david bowie, ever since i saw 'life aquatic' [which is probably 4 or 5 times including the one viewing in theaters; a kick ass wes anderson film if you haven't seen it] i have had a few of his songs stuck in my head and on my ipod- "life on mars?" and "queen bitch".
i've never really understood bowie, nor cared to, but have always imagined being a queen!

if i recall correctly, the riffs mayer played on 'chappelle's show' were even better than this song. the guitar tone and sounds were very Hendrix-esq although i think he uses the rythem knob up instead of treble and less distortion.
