The immigration bill is dead. (for now)

WASHINGTON (AP) - A broad immigration bill to legalize millions of people in the U.S. unlawfully failed a crucial test vote in the Senate Thursday, a stunning setback that could spell its defeat for the year.

The vote was 45-50 against limiting debate on the bill, 15 short of the 60 that the bill's supporters needed to prevail. Most Republicans voted to block Democrats' efforts to bring the bill to a final vote.

  5. Warren, I know this is off-topic, but I wanted to thank you for your help with the formatting of my test blog, Klein Bottle.

I'm going to try to fix it, but bear with me, I'm just a noobie.

  10. Not only is the bill on life support, but its prospects of passing in the upcoming year prior to an election year are next-to-nil. To wit, the presidential candidates can use it as an example of Washington standard politics (even some Democrats are against the thing); not only that, but you have elections in the House and Senate coming up. No legislator up for reelection wants to be associated with this travesty.

Whomever timed the voting on this thing was really, really dumb. It just unified the people against illegal immigration, against Congress, and against a lot of sitting reps at the same time. '08 will be a complete bloodshed.
