The Midget and the Monster

The above picture is a Olympic Arms AR 15.

Semi-automatic, chambered in .223 Remington, (5.56X45 mm NATO), it has a 16” barrel and collapsible stock with a 30 round magazine. Except for the addition of a low power scope, its very similar to the military M4 variant of the M 16 battle rifle. This version has a maximum effective range of about 300 yards and weighs about 5.5 lbs empty. This carbine is optomised for close quarters battle.

The above picture is a single shot .50 BMG, Watson 50 caliber conversion on the same lower receiver as the AR 15, fixed synthetic stock and attached bi-pod and a muzzle brake that reduces recoil by about 40%.

(Believe me, you wouldn't want to shoot it without the muzzle brake!)

The rifle weighs in at about 40 lbs and for all intents and purposes, it is impossible to fire from an unsupported standing position. Although the bullet is capable of over 4 miles of travel, its maximum effective range is somewhere around 1.3 miles.

The above picture is a comparison of the cartridges.

Left to right:
.223 Remington (5.56X45 mm NATO)

.308 Winchester (7.62X51 mm NATO)

8mm Mauser (7.92X57mm)

.50 Browning Machine Gun (.50 BMG)

Now let's make a side by side comparison:

The .50 caliber is 60” long.

The AR is mine.
Special thanks to my son for allowing me to photograph his .50 BMG, (and other weapons which will be shown in folloing posts), and helping me take the pictures.

I didn't go to the range. I took the pictures in the backyard.

I loafed around the house.

There's just something satisfying about a 137 piece wrench and ratchet tool box crashing against the wall and landing with enough noise to make coworkers think you're psycho.

Working is a lousy way to make a living.

Warren, can I borrow your AR? I have some 55 gallon drums that need to be killed bunches.

Neat toys, better stay on your son's good side so you can play with the 50!

TMW,
My husband has surrendered and will be looking into towing possibilities today. We have a few trusted friends who make their livings as mechanics.

We don't have a proper garage--just a carport. This job requires a lift or a pit as the Mustang sits too low to the ground. I always worry that it will slip off the jacks and/or the ramps and squash my husband.

Ah, the joys of shade-tree repair!

I live along the edge of the bottom lands along the Ohio River, except for the no-see-ums, gators and how long it stays hot, there isn't much difference in the heat and humidity.

Several years ago, after a series of storms and tornados, I was without electricity for 3 weeks.

In Indiana, we lived outside of town, had farms all around us, when the storms would come in the cows would start lowing and boy did I get upset! Probably the storms set me off too, but the cows got the blame! Had a 100+ yr. old oak out front, one storm the lightening struck it and split it in half! Fun times. Puts hair on your chest!

Ben and I were quite a pair, when we were first married we both needed new walking shoes. The only pair that fit my feet and felt comfortable were rather pricey, Ben insisted I get them(I have rheumatoid arthritis)we couldn't afford a pair for him too. As we were leaving I was expressing great regret that he couldn't get a pair, he said that it was alright that he too did get a new pair, I was wearing them! Such a sweet, giving man! They aren't to thick on the ground, the really smart women are hanging on to thiers with great enthusiasm! Bet your wife isn't letting you too far out of her sight!

tmw

Warren said...

Elmer's Brother "said, wareen I would love to shoot that 50!"

If you're ever through Southern Indiana, we could work that out.

Around here, there aren't many places to shoot it. Too many people and the round can carry too far. None of the local ranges will allow 50 BMG so we travel to a state owned range about 40 miles from here and make a picnic of it.

This is a single shot set up and you break the gun open like a shot gun to load it. To drop a round in, the bolt unscrews from the breach. Its got a pretty fierce recoil but you can usually manage 4 or 5 rounds before you say, enough!

:^)

Warren said...

Nanc said, "do people really steal hubcaps? "

Hubcaps off of 92 Plymoth Voyagers don't bring much on the market. The thing to steal now is steering wheel mounted airbags.

Sir Warren that sounds like a lot of fun. I have some relatives that live back in that neck of the woods so don't be surprised if I take you up on that.

TMW - Ben sounds like a wonderful man. I am sure you gave him so much. My Mother lives with me since my own father passed away. She also suffers from arthritis.
My brother lost his wife seven years ago (30 of breast cancer) and he was a widower up until about 3 years ago.

I know it's not easy being a widow, but I wouldn't take it out on that guy too hard.

There have been several times when I have been out with my mother and the clerk or the waiter will look at me and say "What will your wife have" or something to that effect. YOU should see my Mom's face. She gets the biggest kick out of it. And they are serious.

My wife doesn't have to worry about me. There is a running gag between us that I know how Lyle Lovett felt when he married Julia Roberts. I told her once that it's a good thing she likes balding ugly fat guys. She said I wasn't that bald. She gets compliments all the time about how young (40) she looks.

Small mule. LOL

With the muzzle brake, its more of a hard push than a sharp sting. You need to set the eye relief for the scope long and keep your eye well back or you'll get one really bad, swollen shut, black eye. There is a growing community of competition .50 BMG shooters.

"I used to do 7.62 NATO long range competition. @ series 12 shots each for a match."

I'll be posting some pictures of some rifles I think you'll recognize.

I Have been known to use a small sandbag and I'm not about to put 24 shots through that thing!

Warren said...

AOW,
Yea, I don't think there was a question of whether they were confirmed kills or not.

(((Thought Criminal))) said...

I said nothing about Canadians in any post above, Ducky. Has the brain disease that withered away enough of your intellect to make you a leftist begun causing you hallucinations?

But, there is a American sniper in Iraq that has surpassed the confirmed kill count set by Carlos Hathcock in Vietnam.

The only Canadians killed by "friendly fire" in Afghanistan were firing .50 caliber machine guns in the air at F-15 fighters flying overhead. The only thing tragic about the fact that American pilots dropped a bomb on them and scattered their flesh over a few acres, besides the fact that it wasn't caught on video from the ground and sent to the families of the Canadian dead and their training commanders as a reminder of what happens at the intersections of stupidity and reality, the Canadian government still hasn't reimbursed the US Air Force for the cost of the bomb.

Freedomnow said...

Mr. B is just a little too strong, and I would like to point out that Ducky is correct that the Canadians are known to have a great reputation for their snipers, but contrary to what Ducky said the US has appreciated them more than even the Canadian government.

After a battle against the Taliban in 2002, a team of Canadian snipers were to be awarded Bronze Stars by the US military but the Canadian government blocked the issuance to the anger of the Canadian soldiers and their US allies.

In that engagement a Canadian sniper bagged the world record for the longest distance shot to result in a confirmed kill.

While Ducky alleges incompetence of American troops, the reality is that it is Ducky’s research that is incompetent.

A US soldier in Iraq, Army Staff Sgt. Jim Gilliland, now holds the world record with a confirmed kill in one shot (the Canadians fired two rounds) at a distance of 3960 feet.

Our troops are the best on the planet, your Baathists, Taliban and Al Qaeda vagabonds have never scored any considerable victories against them and never will.

Ducky, JB and po l'il black Stevie, all exhibit the classic actions of transference. They all really believe that they're "oppressed" and unable to admit they believe they are oppressed, they transfer the feeling of oppression to others.

In jb's case its quite evident that he is a self loathing white and how Joooos are e-vile and anyone that doesn't agree with his moronic world view is either a racist or race traitor, (excepting him of course). Ducky is always reminding us of his Commie heritage and how them thar wicked Joooos are responsible for just about everything wrong in the world.(By the way, did I mention how wealthy he is and how them thar Jooos ruined his leftist POS movie?). L'il Steve was once scared by a white man and never got over it, (but it didn't affect him, affect him, affect him), but all his Brothas have suffered enormously at the hands of whites, (especially Joooos). Did I mention he's a "Proud black man", (that whines like a baby?)

"Freedom Now notes that Anum was a fraud and I concur. No doubt this H-ASS-AN at Browns blog is another fraud and could not withstand my questioning or that of Felis."

Lately, Ducky has been wanting to discuss theology, but he seems only to know the Sermon on the Mount. He just refuses to accept that Islam has no Golden Rule, but seems to want it applied to Muslims. Curious, huh?

I also notice that Duck particularly seems to want to avoid the Epistles of Paul. Too much discussion of sin there, I suppose.

aow - people who do not want to discuss sin, or want to discuss it irrationally or as though they are innocent are usually the most guilty of sinners - i'm checking your link out right now - don't tell elbro, but i am the lowliest of sinners...

Nanc,
G has been posting some excellent comments. Good testimony from him!

AoW- I should say so, doing a very good job too! Maybe talking to all these Christians(who are probably praying for him), the H.S. maybe whispering.
Good morning and G*D bless!

guess ducky hasn't heard that the man who does not work should also in turn not eat.

"g" did give compelling evidence in the favor of truth.

Hello Dear Lady, how are you?,I've finally gotten around to getting over here.Great fire-arms article, especially the 50.cal rifle.Almost 100 years since Col.Browning introduced it , "Ma Deuce''(the M2,.05 cal Browning heavy-machine gun) still gets the respect she deserves.hey,Mrs.D said she sent you my e-mai addy.love to hear from whenever you get the chance.J'Mac.

so good to see you here, j.m.! i don't recall getting your addy, but that could have been my fault with deleting e-mails too quickly. if you post here and leave your e-mail when you sign in - it will come to warren and i and nobody else. do not put it in the body of your comment or else everybody else will have it and trust me, there are a couple you do not want to have it!

this is his article - warren is a firearm's expert and a historian, a man who loves his family and i could not ask for a better blog partner. he's showing me the ropes of blogging and i like it!

afternoon warren - we've been working in the yard (about seven acres of it!) today and the kidz and hubby just took off to the lake to go swimming and fishing, so i had a little time for this and tidying up before they get back. have a good afternoon.

Warren,
No more car troubles now?

Nanc,
Seven acres of yard work? My back hurts, just thinking about it.

Nanc,
Start spreading the news. Blogger willing, I'll have a posting for June 8--the anniversary of MTP's death in 632. I just saved the draft.
